3D animation NRM Great Hall

We recently scanned the whole of the Museum’s Great Hall and its objects with a 3D laser scanner. As the resulting animation was so startling (& slightly unnerving) we thought you’d like to see it. It’s not of broadcast quality (no sound in the clip for example), however it’s well worth watching just to see how close to the actual, physical Great Hall this animation looks. None of this is actual film footage, it’s simply points of data built up by firing beams of lasers at the objects (and the visitors, who you might spot as ’spindles’ walking around the exhibits) in the Museum, and then transferred to a computer to build 3D models.

How to use the old scanner to a large negative press (and B & W photo tip)

Having found a pile of old family negatives 'Box Brownie' size, I tried several ways to scan into digital format, without great success at first until I was in my 35 mm neg scanner in action and had become 'Ah ha' moment. Negatives need light above the flatbed, so it was my experiment.

I managed to get the old scanner car boot sales for pennies so little would be lost when I broke the thing. I remove the top cover to exposeworkings and simply disconnect the internal light source, and when I was there I was inside my coat matt black paint to stop the internal reflections. Mine is LG Scanworks 30a with a simple plug in and light blue interior was quite a climb reflections.

Another challenge was to reduce the black card about the size of a glass plate leaving no gap for light to get over the edge and then cut 2 1 / 4 to 3 1 / 4 inch hole size to make a neat negative mask. II learned a hole on top, so I can set the scanner to scan only the top half of the table to speed things up. You can even reduce two or more depending on your needs.

Leaving the lid open, you can scan negatives normal density only in daylight near the window, but a stronger density negs you'll need a light source of the negative. I found a slide viewing light box to give the best, with regard to all the negative and by trial and error, everything you need to do is to adjustHeight from negative for best results.

Save the scan and load it into Photoshop or equivalent and contact image and it is here. Then you can play it as much like to get the best result.

It may be slower than a good negative scanner and the results are not as good, but have you seen the prices of medium format negative scanner? All I have to scan negatives are old, scratched and dirty, so the results are largelyOK for my needs.

Photography Tip: You Black and white landscape photos? To 'see' the image contrast try to look at a scene through a piece of celluloid as a medium-green type that is used in stage lighting and light / green lens filters. Although the scene is all the green you can see different contrasts in the picture.
